Abstract

The study examines the characteristics of the Global South, a concept that has gained increased significance in international politics, through the lens of Indonesia’s foreign policies. The Global South, which traces its roots to the Non-Aligned Movement and the Third World, advocates for equality and multipolarity in international politics by amplifying the voices of weaker and less-developed powers against the hierarchical world order dominated by the great powers. Since the Asian–African Conference in Bandung in 1955, Indonesia has upheld the doctrine of free and active diplomacy, which aims to establish an international order that ensures political independence and equitable economic development. Although Indonesia is emerging as a middle power, its status as a weaker state requires that it adopt foreign policy strategies, such as hedging and equilateral alignment, to mitigate security threats and reduce economic dependence on various regional, international, bilateral, and multilateral levels. Further, Indonesia’s responses to the U.S.–China rivalry, military conflicts, regional cooperation, multilateral organizations, and foreign aid demonstrate its goals, methods, principles, and strategies of foreign policy, thereby reflecting the Global South’s orientation toward a multipolar world rooted in equality and independence.
