Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate the stigma faced by mothers of children with developmental disabilities, analyzing interviews with eight mothers at a counseling center. By applying content analysis in line with Krippendorff's method and referencing Corrigan and Kosyluk's Stigma Social Cognition Model, we identified two major stigma categories: social and self-stigma. Social stigma primarily manifests through stereotypes such as the perceived misuse of disability benefits, whereas self-stigma involves internalized feelings, like a sense of entrapment due to the child's disability. Interestingly, our findings challenge common societal misconceptions, revealing a remarkable resilience among these mothers. They frequently expressed empathy and gratitude in their parenting roles, highlighting the strength and positivity often overlooked in societal narratives. This research underscores the need for increased societal understanding and support for mothers navigating the challenges of raising children with disabilities. By fostering a more empathetic and informed view of these families, we can contribute to building a more inclusive and supportive community.
