초록
The purpose of this article is to examine popular understanding of politics in Thailand under ‘Thai-Style Democracy’ as well as the relationship between the popular understanding and ‘Thai-Style Democracy’. The data used in this study are results of five times(2001, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2019) Asian Barometer Survey implemented in Thailand between 2001 and 2019. Specifically, data of three categories - popular understanding of democracy, evaluation of political institution and political regime, evaluation of governments – are used. Some meaningful findings regarding the relationship between popular understanding of politics and ‘Thai-Style Democracy’ are as follows: first, Thai people do not differentiate the military regime, an authoritarian government by a coup, from the civilian government, a democratic one by election. They included military government within the category of democratic ones. Second, Thais picked the military as the most reliable institution, whereas political parties as the least reliable one. Third, more than 70% of respondents of those surveys gave positive evaluations for Thai political regime, while more than 60% of them agreed with the change of their regime. These two conflicting results implicated the unclear evaluation standards and the inconsistency of evaluations of Thais. Fourth, ratio of positive respondents toward Thai politics in general shows falling trend. In conclusion, popular understanding of politics in Thailand was closely related with ‘Thai-Style Democracy’. There was popular understanding of politics matching with essentials of ‘Thai-Stye Democracy’ led by the military and the network monarchy. The former functioned as a background factor supporting the continuous operation of the latter.
