Abstract

In the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the development of products and services utilizing artificial intelligence has become diverse, leading to a rapid increase in the number of users. In this study, we aimed to explore the Korean university students’ perceptions of their romantic relationships with AI. The research identified four types: ‘Incapable of Love with Machines,’ ‘Love Necessitating Legal Protection,’ ‘Dating Practice and Coach,’ and ‘Heart Connected Love.’ The ‘Incapable of Love with Machines’ type perceives AI strictly as a machine and takes a strong stance against romantic involvement with AI. The ‘Love Necessitating Legal Protection’ type expresses concerns about dating violence that may occur in relationships with AI and emphasizes the importance of legal regulations to prevent such incidents. The ‘Dating Practice and Coach’ type perceives AI as a tool and considers relationships with AI as an opportunity to practice real-world dating. Finally, the ‘Heart Connected Love’ type transcends the bias of viewing AI as a machine or technology, recognizing it as a social presence and believing that romantic involvement with AI is possible.
