Abstract
This study aimed to test the effect of CCTV perception on women’s fear of crime. Data analysis of 211 women in Busan and Daejeon revealed that CCTV perception decreased both fear of crime in general and fear of sexual crime. Among the factors that have been regarded to cause fear of crime, neighborhood disorders showed the most salient effect. Besides, fear of crime in general appeared to increase as income goes up and trust in policing goes down. The effectiveness and efficiency of CCTV policy seemed to depend on how fit the policy is with the characteristics of neighborhood and crime. Also, proactive public relations and adequate maintenance were required according to the CPTED principles. Among other things, residents’ cooperation and involvement in solving neighborhood crime problems and community-oriented policing need to be progressed in harmony. Notwithstanding the limitation of generalization, this study was valuable in that it was one of the first empirical attempts in Korea to discover the causal relationship between CCTV and women’s fear of crime. It is expected that this study contributes to solving the matter of women’s fear of (sexual) crime, a huge issue in recent Korean society.
