Abstract
In this paper, I make an attempt to philosophically analyze the notion of equality by comparing different positions with regard to equality as social ideal, and to derive some implications upon education from this analysis. This paper comprises two parts. First, I try to comprehend the multifaceted nature of equality by reviewing distinct perspectives concerning its meaning, interpretation, application, etc., especially focusing on discrepancies within egalitarianism, not to mention differences between egalitarianism and non-egalitarianism. Furthermore, I attempt to criticize strong versions of egalitarianism. Second, I endeavor to demonstrate various problems embedded in institutions and mechanisms for equal education, which are mostly due to partial and/or erroneous interpretation of equality. In conclusion, I argue that equality is by no means a desideratum; it is a very complicated, if not necessarily confusing, notion.
