Abstract

Social control theories explain delinquency/crime by variations in ties the conventional social order and social agency. There are various social control agency, such as family, teacher, peer, and police, but family is considered to be the major agency in exercising social control against juvenile's delinquency. The aim in this study is to analyze empirically the relation between family and delinquency with a social control theory, and an effect to indirect/direct/internalized control by family/parents on delinquency, and to explain for variations in these relationships within gender groups. The data that we have analysed here were obtained from a self-reported survey conducted in Seoul in July, 2008. The sample consists of a total of 2,056 elementary/middle/high school students aged between 10 and 18. In this study, the direct control by family is operationalized as parental attachment, the indirect control is monitoring and punishment, and internalized control is self-control. we found that the effects indirect/direct/internalized control by family/parents on juvenile's delinquency is respectively significant, also these controls is related significantly with both male and female delinquency. This results indicate that social control by family/parents is the major factor to delinquency. And we wish this study to contribute to the understand and explanation of the relationship between social control by parents and juvenile delinquence in our society. From our study, it is implied that future research should attempt to develop a more considerable model and the measures on the major concepts and analysis methods on these issue
