Abstract
The purpose of the study is to examine gender differences in the effects of self-control and attachment on delinquency. For this purpose the study used survey data of 452 adolescents(335 males and 117 females) on probation, collected by Korean Institute of Criminology in 2018. The results of structural equation modeling with the total sample showed that self-control had direct effects on all types of delinquency(drinking, cyber delinquency, violent delinquency, sexual delinquency) except for smoking, and also had indirect effects on delinquency through relationships with guardians, officers, and deviant peers. Although the findings provided partial support for both social selection and social causation models, mixed selection-causation model provides better explanation of delinquency. According to multi-group structural equation modeling, gender similarities were found in the effects of self-control and deviant peer association on delinquency, while gender differences in the relationships between self-control and attachment variables excluding deviant peer association and between these variables and delinquency appeared. Social selection and social causation were partially supported, but mixed model was appropriate for the male youth. For the female youth social causation was more supported than social selection. The findings suggest that the traditional criminological theories can be used to explain female delinquency but limitations still exist. The results suggest the need of programs which aim at increasing self-control and relationships with prosocial others and decreasing deviant peer association. In particular, we need to consider the influence of gender on programs.
