Abstract

Tractatus and Philosophical Investigations can be regarded as sharing one single question : how is it possible to show 'what cannot be said' through 'what can be said'. The differences between the 'picture-theory' from Tractatus and the 'use-theory' from Philosophical Investigations represent different answers to the one question. The question Wittgenstein has in mind throughout his early and late philosophy can be described as the educational question, which can bring about a whole new point of view on the relationship between educational practice and the good life. Tractatus strives to show 'what cannot be said' through its propositions in it, presupposing the Reality of the world' and the ostensive definitions of things. However, on the basis of these two ideas Tractatus leads to fail to define the meaning of 'showing' what cannot be said in its proper sense and it turns out to be confined to metaphysician's way of thinking criticized badly by Wittgenstein himself in the end. Philosophical Investigations can provide solutions to the difficulties which Tractatus is faced with by replacing Tractatus's propositions with the idea of language-games as showing the ineffable truth. According to Philosophical Investigations, it can be said that language-games show the form of life, and the form of life is presented only by language-games at the same time. In a nutshell, one presents the other in circulation, which means that language-games establish the form of life on the transcendental level. The form of life is a kind of human condition which is acknowledged or identified in the course of every single human being's actual living.
