잘삶에서 관계의 중요성과 그 교육적 함의

이 글에서는 ‘관계’의 성공이 잘삶의 핵심 요소일 수 있다는 점을 밝히고 그 교육적 함의가무엇인지를 논의한다. 화이트는 최근 잘삶을 ‘가치 있는 활동과 관계에 전심으로 그리고 성공적으로 몰두하는 삶’이라고 정의하고 있다. 관계가 잘삶의 핵심 요소로 주장되고 있는, 왜 그런지 좀 더 심도 있는 철학적 논의가 필요하다. 이 글에 서는 존재론적 측면에서 인간의 관계 문제를 논의한 후 좋은 관계의 결과로 드러나는 우애를 조명해 보았다. 인간의 주체는 홀로주체성이 아닌 서로주체성으로 이해해야 된다는 점에서 관계의 중요성이 드러난다. 홀로주체성은 타자를 배제한 채 원자적으로 홀로 존재하는 주체의 능동성만을 강조한다. 이에 비해 서로주체성은 타자와의 만남을 전제로 하며, 만남을 통해 주체 안에 능동성과 수동성이 함께 어우러져 주체성을 형성하게 됨을 강조한다. 서로주체성의 관점에서 인간은 필연적으로 관계적 존재이다. 또한 인간이 여러 형태의 관계를 맺고 살아가면서 경험하는 우애가 잘삶의 핵심요소라는 사실을 아리스토텔레스의 논의를 통해 파악해볼 수 있다. 이런 관계의 중요성은 교육의 실제에 많은 시사점을 주고 있다. 첫째, 서로주체성의 이념은 타인과의 관계, 반성 및 성찰, 만남 등을 중시하는 교육을 요청한다. 둘째, 다양한 지속적 관계를 중시하는 교육은 서로주체성의 형성 및 행복에 기여할 수 있다. 셋째, 학생들이 우애 관계를 맺도록 적극적으로 도와줄 수 있는 다양한 교육이 요청된다. 특히 학생들의 잘삶을 증진시키기 위한 교육에서는, 그들이 좋은 관계를 맺고 살아갈 기회와 실제적 방안들을 제시하려는 교육적 노력이 요구된다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the significance of relationship in well-being and to discuss its educational implications. Recently, John White describes: well-being is one filled with successful and whole-hearted engagement in worthwhile activities and relationships. In his view, relationships are considered as the important components of well-being. Then, we need to explain philosophically how relationships relate to well-being. In this paper, I discuss relationships in the aspect of ontology and friendship as an important virtue for well-being. The significance of relationships is revealed from the perspective that the self identity is to be understood as not mono subjectivity but mutual subjectivity. Mono subjectivity only stresses the activity of subjectivity that excludes all others and exists alone atomically. On the other hand, mutual subjectivity presupposes the encounter with others and emphasizes the process of formation of subjectivity, in which activity and passivity goes together by encounter. In the viewpoint of mutual subjectivity, human beings are necessarily relational ones. Aristotle regards friendship as a key constituent of well-being. The significance of relationship has many implications for educational practices: (1) The idea of ‘mutual subjectivity’ requires educational practices which recognize the importance of relations with others, reflection upon these relations, and activities for sharing these with others. (2) Education for promoting various and continuous relationships in itself contributes to the formation of mutual subjectivity and human well-being for students. (3) Developing friendship among students requires our educators to make various kinds of positive interventions at schools. Most of all, the education for the promotion of the well-being of pupils requires to provide opportunities and practical ways that they can have good relations.
