존 화이트의 웰빙 교육에서 ‘내재적 가치’의 의미

화이트는 세속화된 자유 민주주의 사회에서 교육은 웰빙을 추구하는 것이어야 한다고 본다. 그는 최근 자신의 검증된 욕구충족으로서의 웰빙 개념을 “내재적으로 가치 있는 활동과 관계에 전심으로 참여하며 성공적인 삶”으로 수정하였다. 그는 웰빙 개념을 재정의함으로써, 웰빙을 이전보다 더 포괄적이고 균형적으로 이해하고자 했다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그의 웰빙 개념은 여전히 모호한 부분이 있다. 본 논문에서는 최근 화이트의 웰빙 개념 중 ‘내재적 가치’의 의미에 대해 논의고자 한다. 화이트의 내재적 가치의 의미는 첫째, 내재적 가치를 교육의 개념 속에 붙박여 있는 것으로 보는 피터스의 견해와 다르다. 화이트에게 있어 내재적 가치는 교육의 개념과 관련된다기 보다는 행위 당사자의 웰빙에 내재적으로 유익이 된다는 의미이다. 둘째, 화이트의 웰빙 교육에서 내재적으로 가치 있는 것에는 활동과 관계, 실제적인 활동까지 포함된다. 셋째, 화이트는 피터스가 좁게 해석한 내재적 가치의 외연을 넓힘으로써 교육이 지식 내지 학문 중심 교육을 넘어서 웰빙, 즉 인간 삶의 전반적이고 포괄적인 번영을 추구해야 한다는 것을 정당화하고자 했다.
Abstract
White insists that education should pursue a pupils's well-being in a secularized liberal democratic society. He has recently revised a conception of well-being from an informed-desire satisfaction to a view of pursuing of intrinsically worthwhileness by himself. By redefining the concept of well-being, he sought to understand the state of well-being more comprehensively and in a more balanced way than before. Nevertheless, his conception of well-being is still ambiguous. In this paper, I will discuss the meaning of White's 'intrinsic value' or 'intrinsic worthwhileness.' First, the meaning of White's intrinsic value is different from Peters's. Peters's conception of intrinsic value is embedded in the concept of education. But for White, intrinsic value is not related to the concept of education, but rather is inherently beneficial to pupil as an agent of well-being-ness. Second, what is intrinsic value in White's well-being education includes activities, relationships, and practical activities. Third, White sought to justify that education should pursue the state of well-being, that is, the overall and comprehensive prosperity of human life, beyond subjects or academic-oriented education, by expanding the scope of Peters' narrow interpretation of intrinsic values.
