Abstract

This paper is an attempt to elucidate the meaning of the story of the ascent of Eros in Plato’s Symposium. Eros is not the blind desire that is simply intent on filling up a deficiency. On the basis of an objective criterion, Eros can judge something to be more beautiful or uglier, which implies that Eros can be able to ascend. Eros seeks ‘the eternal possession of the good things’ and immortality, and the view of Eros’s function as ‘reproduction in beauty’ aims to show that the beauty enables the good things to be produced. The produces depend on what kind of beauties Eros establishes a relation with. And the aspiration to understand the nature of beauty leads Eros to ascend till it attains to insight into the form of beauty. When we guide Eros to the right way, we can produce true virtue and even take flight to be godlike. This is the message the story of Eros’s ascent gives us.
