존재에서 연역된 윤리학: 플라톤과 루소

루소의 윤리학은 기독교와 당대 철학에 의해 형해화된 도덕 관념들을 존재론적인 환원을 통해 재규정하려는 작업이다. 이는 소피스트들에 의해 세속화 및 형해화된 도덕 관념들을 동일한 방법으로 재규정하려 했던 소크라테스와 플라톤의 작업에 유비될 수 있을 것이다. 이들은 유일최고 존재인 ‘있음’의 상태로서 ‘좋음’과 ‘훌륭함’의 의미를 규정하며, 아울러 그의 유지와 관련하여 ‘올바름’을 규정한다. 루소 역시 최고 존재인 신을 상정하고 그 의지에 따르는 상태로서 ‘좋음’을, ‘좋음’을 추동하고 유지하는 동기로서 ‘선’과 ‘올바름’을 규정하고 있다. 그들의 존재론적 윤리학의 목적은 기존의 도덕 관념들이 단절시킨 도덕과 행위의 관계를 복구하기 위한 것인데, 일단 도덕과 관련된 개념들을 존재론적으로 재규정한 후 '존재‘에 대한 ‘앎’을 통해 행위와 연결한다. 그런데 이는 대부분이 인간의 인식능력으로는 확보할 수 없는 것으로 규정되며, 따라서 일반적인 교육을 통한 양자의 연결은 불가능하다. 그로 인해 그들의 윤리학은 정치학으로 확장된다. 따라서 초월적 존재론으로부터 분리된 현대 윤리학의 개념들로 루소를 이해하는 것은 그의 윤리학과 정치학의 관계를 왜곡시킬 소지가 있다고 하겠다. 본 연구는 루소의 존재론과 윤리학의 관계를 규명하는 것을 통해 그와 같은 문제에 대한 하나의 해결책을 모색해보는 것이다.
Abstract
Rousseau's ethics is a work to redefine moral concepts abstracted by Christianity and contemporary philosophy. It is a analogy with the work of Socrates and Plato to redefine those abstracted and secularized by Sophist. Socrates and Plato define 'the goodness(to agathon)' and 'aretē(virtue) as a state of 'to be' which is only 'being' and 'dikaiosynē(justice)' in relation with keeping the state. Similarly, Rousseau define 'the goodness(le bien)' as a state to act on God's will which is absolute being, 'the goodness(la bonté)' and 'justice' as two motives to make act on the will. The end of their works reducing ethics to ontology is to restore the relation between act and morality disconnected by existing moral concepts. They redefine epistemologically moral concepts and make knowing of 'being' link moral to act. But because this knowledge is defined as the object that most of the people can not acquire, the link by general education is impossible. Thus their ethics extend politics. Consequentially, reading Rousseau through concepts of modern ethics separated from transcendental ontology can make misunderstand the relation between Rousseau's ethics and politics. This study tries to find a solution to the problem by investigating relation between Rousseau's ontology and ethics.
