루소사상에서 정치적 이데올로기로서의 ‘종교’: 플라톤과의 비교를 중심으로

루소의 사상체계는 하나의 아포리아를 안고 있다. 이상적인 정치체제를 수립하기 위해서는 일반의지에 대한 인민의 동의(‘사회계약’)가 필요한데, 인민의 대부분은 일반의지의 합리성을 인식할 능력을 결여하고 있다는 것이다. 루소는 이 난관을 일반의지에 대한 ‘이해’를 ‘믿음’으로 대체하는 것을 통해 해결하고자 한다. 인간의 행동을 추동하는 의지는 이성의 작용인 인식에서 비롯되는 것이 아니라 정념에 의해 형성되는 것이기 때문에, 그와 같은 해결이 가능해진다. 『사회계약론』에 제시되고 있는 ‘종교’는 바로 일반의지에 대한 ‘믿음’을 갖도록 하는 수단이며, 현대적인 개념을 사용한다면 하나의 정치적 이데올로기에 해당한다. 이 ‘종교’는 그 기능을 ‘사회계약’ 당시에만 한정적으로 발휘하는 것이 아니라, 이후에도 ‘시민종교’의 형태로 계속해서 새로 수립된 정치체제의 유지를 위해 기능한다. 정치체제의 변혁과 관련한 이와 같은 루소의 사유는 플라톤에 의해 이미 숙고된 바의 것이다. 플라톤은 『국가』에서 진리(이데아에 대한 ‘앎’)에 대한 동의를 필요로 하는 이상국가의 수립과 이데아를 인식할 수 있는 능력을 결여한 인민 사이의 모순을 ‘Gennaion Pseudos’라는 ‘신화’를 통해 해결하려고 한다. 이는 ‘사회계약’의 수단으로서의 ‘종교’에 대응하는 것이다. 아울러 『법률』에서 논구되고 있는 ‘법의 전문’은 ‘사회계약’ 이후의 ‘시민종교’에 대응한다. 정당한 정치체제의 유지를 위한 시민의 양성은 인간의 이성적 능력을 개발하는 교육과 비이성적 영역에 관여하는 종교의 연계를 통해서만 달성가능하다. 따라서 정치적 이데올로기로서의 종교에 대한 루소의 사유를 이해하는 것은 교육에 대한 루소의 사유를 이해하는 기초가 된다.
Abstract
Rousseau’s political thought has a aporia. It is that the ideal political body needs the people's agreement(social contract) with General Will, but the majority of the people have no intellect for it. Rousseau tried to overcome the aporia by replacement ‘understanding’ of General Will with ‘belief’ in it. Because he thought that will of behavior did not derive from knowing by reason but the passion, ‘Religion’ in Du Contrat Social is ‘political ideology’ as the way which makes the people believe in General Will. This ‘Religion’ functions in social contract and futhermore in the shape of ‘Civil Religion' maintains new political body constituted by social contract. Plato had already thought about the aporia related to change of political body. In Politeia, he tried to overcome the discrepancy between two theses, one is that constitution of the ideal political body needs the people's agreement with Truth(logos of Idea) and the other is that the people have no intellect for understanding it, by Myth(‘Gennaion Pseudos’). It corresponds to ‘Religion’ as the way of social contract. And ‘Prooimion(Preamble)’ in Nomoi corresponds to ‘Civil Religion’ after social contract. Only collaboration between ‘Education’ develops intellect and ‘Religion’ related to non-intellectual area can make the citizen for maintenance the ideal political body. Therefore, understanding of Rousseau’s thought of ‘Religion’ as political ideology is a key of understanding of his thought of ‘Education’.
