『에밀』에 나타난 목적론적 자연개념의 교육학적 시사

이 연구는 루소 교육이론의 핵심인 ‘자연’을 목적론적 개념으로 해석함으로써 그의 사상 전체를 일관되게 해석하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 이 연구의 관점에서 보면, 『에밀』에 삽입되어 있는 “사부아 보좌신부의 신앙고백”은 종교를 가르치기 위한 내용으로서 또는 자신의 종교적 신념을 피력하기 위해서 우연히 삽입한 것이 아니라 목적론적 자연 개념을 통해서 자연과 사회의 연결을 시도하는, 그 자체로서 하나의 교육이론이다. 전기 저작들에서 루소가 그리는 ‘자연상태’는 인간의 왜곡된 정념과 소외를 드러내기 위한 가설적 상태이지만, 도덕성이나 교육과 같은 인간 고유의 특성이 소거된 부정적 상태였다. 이에 비해서 『에밀』에서 제시되는 목적론적 자연 개념으로서의 ‘신’은 소극적·부정적 개념으로는 해소할 수 없는 자연과 사회의 연결을 가능하게 한다. 왜냐하면 목적론적 자연 개념은 경험적인 자연법칙들 사이의 유기적 조화로 구현되는 이념이면서 도덕적 사회가 지향하는 합리적 질서를 의미하기 때문이다. 이러한 자연은 인과법칙을 통해서 세계를 이해하는 주체이자 도덕적 행위를 실천하는 주체로서 인간이 내면에 갖추어야 하는 조화로운 질서라고 볼 수 있다. “신앙고백”에 나타난 신의 개념은 이와 같이 인간이 경험하고 살아가는 자연과 사회의 궁극적인 목적론적 질서를 가리킨다. 이렇게 “신앙고백”에 나타난 목적론적 자연 개념을 중심으로 루소 사상 전체를 재해석할 때, 표면상 문명을 비판하고 교육을 부정하는 대신 자연에 대한 예찬으로 일관하는 저작들과 사회의 개혁과 공공교육을 강력히 주장하는 그의 또 다른 저작들 사이의 모순을 해결할 수 있고, 루소가 그리는 이상적인 삶의 상태를 바르게 이해할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to exhibit the teleological concept of nature in “Profession of Faith of the Savoyard Vicar” of Emile and explore how it can be interpreted as an educational theory. In this viewpoint “Profession of Faith” is not merely a religious subject nor Rousseau’s religious faith but his new philosophical approach to nature. In his earlier writings, ‘natural state’ is an antithesis to criticize human absurdity but is a negative state without human unique characters like morality and education. On the other hand, in “Profession of Faith” of Emile, he represented the teleological concept of nature. It is the divine order that is intimated in the natural world and the moral society, or rather the internal order of mind that we acquire while learning natural laws and engaging in moral activity(i.e. in theory and practice). Therefore, Rousseau’s ideal state is a not primitive state without civilization or education, nor a totalitarian society without individual freedom. It is well-ordered mind of well-educated person.
