오늘날 대학은 진리탐구의 본질적 가치보다는 유용성을 중시하고 있고 도덕적 가치보다는 실용성을 강조하는 등 대학 본연의 소명과 역할을 다하지 못하고 있다. 주체적인 자아형성과 좋은 시민을 길러내기 위한 노력보다는 시장의 논리에 기초한 도구적 기능적 요구에 압도되고 있는 실정이다. 자유인의 지향이 대학교육 특히 대학 교양교육의 출발이었고, 바로 이러한 주체적 인격을 지닌 자유인의 모습은 세계화된 정보사회에서 요청되는 이상적인 시민상과 크게 다르지 않다. 바람직한 시민성의 형성이라는 관점에서 볼 때 오늘날 대학의 교양교육은 교양과 상식을 지닌 현명하고 책임감 있는 시민을 육성하기 위한 본연의 기능을 회복할 필요가 있다. 오늘의 대학교육이 근본적인 개혁을 필요로 한다면, 그 방향은 자유로운 지성을 지닌 비판적 시민을 육성할 수 있는 교양교육의 본질을 회복하는 데 있다. 본 연구는 교양과 교양교육의 의의에 비추어 대학교육이 직면한 현실과 문제점을 짚어 보고, 대학 교양교육과 시민성 함양사이의 관계에 대한 논의를 토대로 좋은 시민을 길러내기 위한 대학 교양교육의 방향과 과제를 제시하고 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to suggest some directions for the development of citizenship through the liberal education on the college level. If we could regard the substance of education as a kind of acquisition of Bildung, the main task of college liberal education would be cultivating humanity and citizenship. Unfortunately however the current situation for the college liberal education has turned out to be a failure under the pressure of professionalism, market value, and neoliberalism in general. In this vein the principle aim of liberal education has to be strengthening the significance of citizenship for the information society as well as the individual's innate and creative power as a person. For these tasks, liberal education has to try to facilitate the original mission of cultivating people's humanity need and make people having a capacity for reflective thinking and self-reflection. Also college liberal education has to open the way for being the cultivated citizen who respects the humanity of her or his fellow citizens with mutual understanding.
