Abstract
This paper aims to examine the nature of art-experience and the role of emotion in education through art, taking the approach of John Dewey’s art theory and Jenefer Robinson’s emotion theory. First, by examining Dewey’s conception of art in terms of aesthetic experience, I discuss how the experience of art leads to the transformation of the subject of the experience, and why it is crucial to investigate how emotions work in understanding the art-experience. This paper also presents a way to understand the fluidity of emotions that has been shown by Dewey to play a key role in our art -experience, while reviewing Robinson's emotion theory in order to complement Dewey's arguments and elucidate ambiguities. Lastly, this paper indicates that the important cognitive value of art is not in the knowledge acquired as the result of the art-experience but in the process of experiencing art and the possibility of transforming the subject within the process.
