Abstract
In general we have an expectation that the demographic structure will change after Korean reunification, in ways that alleviate the aging problems of South Korea and positively affect the economy through an increase in the working-age population. This optimistic expectation is based on the fact that the youth population and total fertility rates of North Korea are relatively higher than those in the South. However, not only has North Korea become an aging society since 2004 but its total fertility rate is at present lower than the average among developing countries. Moreover, in the probable event that the North’s birth rate drops sharply right after reunification, this optimism concerning demographic change is unlikely to be realized.
