근대이후 공교육이 보편화되어 가면서 공교육은 여러 문제점들을 드러내었고 특히 학습자의 자율적인 성장을 저해하는 근본적인 문제점들에 대해 아나키스트들은 비판하면서 다양한 대안적인 교육운동을 진행해 왔다. 본 연구는 이런 대안적인 학교교육의 흐름 가운데 아나키스트의 중심개념인 ‘자유’를 급진적으로 실천한 니일의 서머힐학교 교육내용이 갖는 아나키즘적인 성격을 해명하고자 했다. 니일의 서머힐 학교교육은 아나키즘의 주요 특징인 자연론적 사회관, 자율적인 개인, 반권위주의, 그리고 공동채지향성의 측면에서 아나키즘적인 특성을 온전히 보여주는 실천사례였으며 니일의 사상과 실천은 아나키즘에 입각한 학교교육의 대표적인 사례라고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
Public education has been generalized since modern era and it has become clear that public education brings about many problems. Anarchists focused especially on the problem that the children are prevented their autonomous growth because of public education, and they evolved an alternative educational movement. A. S. Neill’s Summerhill School is one of the schools established on the spirit of such alternative movement, which practiced the idea of freedom, the core concept of anarchism, to the extreme. This paper tries to explicate Neill’s educational thoughts and practices in Summerhill School from the viewpoint of anarchism that shows the typical case of educational concepts such as autonomous individual, anti-authoritarianism, community-orientedness. The paper concludes that the Neill’s educational thoughts and practices in Summerhill School is a representative example of anarchistic education.
