Abstract

This study aims to examine the posthuman view of children. Posthumanism emerged to address the limitations of modern humanism, particularly its anthropocentrism and Cartesian dualism. Each era’s view of children reflects its response to the question, “Who is a child?” From this perspective, investigating posthuman views of children seeks to understand children today, who cannot be fully understood within existing frameworks, through the lens of posthumanism, a significant intellectual trend of our time. This study draws on Murris’ new materialistic perspective to analyze posthuman views of children. Murris criticizes the psychological perspective(child-as-i) and sociological perspective(child-as-ii), which have been the dominant apporoaches to understanding children since the modern era, and adopts new materialism as a methodological framework for understanding children today to develop a posthuman view of children(child-as-iii). Murris specifically draws on Barad's agental realism, which has significantly influenced new materialist discourses to conceptualize the posthuman child. According to Murris, the posthuman child is a subject of bodymindmatter, relational materialism, and ethico-onto-epistemology. This posthuman child is described as ‘inhuman becomings iii’, characterized as rich, resilient, and resourceful.
