Abstract
This paper examines how the discourse surrounding the identity of educational philosophy has evolved over the 60-year history of the Korean Philosophy of Education Society, and how the understanding of “Korean philosophy of education” has shifted in the process. The discussion on the identity of educational philosophy in Korea can be broadly divided into three phases. The first phase (1964–1989) was marked by a search for a “Korean identity-focused philosophy of education”-an indigenous philosophical framework rooted in critical reflection on the challenges and missteps involved in the uncritical adoption of foreign ideas. In the second phase (1990-2005), “Korean philosophy of education” was manifested as a “philosophy of education in Korea”, which basically aimed to develop the philosophy and practice of Korean education, while diversifying and specializing in philosophical research (methods) and connecting with educational reality. In the third phase (2006–2024), the term “Korean philosophy of education” has become less familiar, and references to “Korea” have diminished in discussions on the identity of educational philosophy. Instead, there has been a shift toward seeking a more universal understanding of educational philosophy. A key discourse representative of this period is “educational philosophy as a philosophy of practice,” influenced by contemporary Anglo-American educational philosophy. From now on, Korean educational philosophy needs to move in a more three-dimensional and integrated direction while compensating for the weaknesses of the three levels of scholarship related to the Western modern rationalist paradigm. In this context, the search for a “Korean identity focused philosophy of education” can be renewed.
