Abstract

This study reinterprets Yuilhan (1895–1971) not merely as an entrepreneur or independence activist, but as an adult learner who reflected on his own life and expanded it into social practice during a period of national crisis. While previous studies have examined him as an educational or learning thinker, this study explores his life from an adult learner’s perspective, thereby providing new educational-philosophical insights. To this end, key concepts from complexity theory—initial conditions, self-organization, and emergence—are employed as interpretive tools rather than as a closed explanatory framework. The analysis reveals that Yuilhan’s life can be understood as a process of reorganizing initial conditions, transforming tensions among multiple value systems into resources for self-organization, and creating new social orders in a turbulent context. Four educational-philosophical insights emergefrom this interpretation: (1) humans are not passive products of conditions but reflective agents who can reconstruct them; (2) learning is not mere training but an existential process of self-transformation; (3) adult learning should transcend individual achievement and expand toward public responsibility and the ethics of care; and (4) the aims and methods of education should emphasize lifelong processes of self-organization rather than externally imposed goals. In conclusion, this study highlights Yuilhan as a model of adult learning in the age of complexity, underscoring the need to reconceptualize adult learning as an existential and ethical practice.
