Abstract
The present study examined the structure and significance of collaborative writing activities based on the web. Writing is basically a social activity. The most obvious feature of this is collaborative writing. The Web 2.0 environment, which is characterized by participation, sharing, openness, and interaction, provides a useful environment for collaborative writing, while keeping in touch with the social attributes of writing. The existing collaborative writing was mainly done in the same time and space. On the other hand, in a web-based environment, it is possible to write collaboratively in a collocated synchronous situation or even in an asynchronous remote situation. The Web 2.0 environment breaks the boundaries of existing time and space. Thus, in this study, three features of Web-based collaborative writing realized by integration of time and space are presented. First, real-time communication is possible even in an asynchronous environment. Second, it is possible for multiple writers to write at the same time and about the same document in a remote situation. Thirdly, it is possible to share and reflect the thinking process as a record of writing activities. In addition, a Web-based writing program can be used in a variety of educational contexts, such as when there is a need for feedback or evaluation of writing, or for the creation of cloud-based electronic portfolios.
