Abstract

This paper examined the nature of readers' understanding of text based on Deleuze's perspective on sign. Deleuze's signs differs in its properties from what Saussure refers to. Deleuze's sign is something that exists makes us sensibly encounter, affect, and think. The thinking is an activity of consciousness to find the essence of the sign. Text emanates signs toward the reader as a being. The reader understands the text by sensing and responding to the text signs, thinking, and revealing the essence of the signs. The meeting between readers and signs is accidental and violent. The reader facing the sign executes thoughts that are not bound by the thought image. This leads the reader to learning. The encounter between the reader and the text sign has the property of encounter. Although the reader did not intend it, the meeting is inevitable and makes the reader think. The reader meets and learns the possible world through encounter with text signs. The learning that the reader gets by meeting the text sign has the nature of the difference itself. The reader's text understanding is to recognize the possible world by encountering the text sign, and to achieve the learning that is the difference itself.
