Abstract

The purpose of this study is to create a tool to diagnose learners' vocabulary ability. The process of developing a tool to diagnose vocabulary ability consisted of 'exploring vocabulary evaluation theory, extracting vocabulary to be evaluated, designing vocabulary ability job, setting item type and item development, standardized test and item equalization, and setting vocabulary ability level'. Through the analysis of previous studies, vocabulary to be evaluated was extracted based on basic vocabulary and thinking vocabulary, and vocabulary ability constructs were established as "shape, meaning, relationship, expansion, and pragmatic", and evaluation item types were set, and A to D questions were developed for each level of 1 to 3. In order to standardize the vocabulary ability diagnostic test tool, the preliminary test and the main test were conducted, and the equalization test of types A to D by level 1 to 3 was conducted. In addition, the upper, middle, and lower levels were set based on the test results. The development of this test tool, which systematically classifies vocabulary, clearly establishes constructs, and evaluates vocabulary skills, is significant both for learning and academically, in a reality where test tools that comprehensively and accurately diagnose learners' vocabulary skills are rare. Various discussions on vocabulary composition and evaluation methods, and elaboration of vocabulary evaluation items are areas to be discussed further in the future, but we hope that this study will be the basis for developing various test tools to diagnose vocabulary ability.
