Abstract
Due to the overshelming economic infuence of the British empire in the early modernization period, the relatively small amount of attention has been taken on the economic development of the Netherlands. However, recent several studies reveals that the Netherlands had modernized its exonomy earlier than the british empire, which makes us further liik into the causes and characteristics of the country from the various aspects. In perspective of are and ecomo,y, this paper is aimed to focus on the development of art market in the Netherlands during the seventeenth century. The vottom lime is about how the art market of the netherlands vegan to vurgeon into the modern one, and what was the cause of the rise and fall of it. Conclusively, this paper shows that it was the massive demand of the middle class that had out the Nerherlands on the modern art market different form the traditional system of sponsorship or patronage on the part of the upper class. At ghe same time, the massive demand of the middle class transformed eht rtend of art from historical paintings into landscape and still-life oriental ones. The remarkable market development had a positive impact on the status of artists and the organization of them. Especially in the middle of the seventeenth century artist group in the Netherlands came to be independent from the traditional social and economic system named guild. From the end of the century, meanwhile, the development of art in the Netherlands had been slow down because of the economic depression. At that time, in addition to that it can be said that there were the ingerent factors such as demand source change from the middle class to the upper class and the slyggish foreign demand for the Netherlands paintings.
