Abstract
This study attempts to reevaluate Jan Lievens from Leiden, the Netherlands, as a painter with a unique painting style and artistic achievements on the premise that art history has undervalued his artistic status. Despite his artistic reputation in his lifetime, there is little public awareness of Lievens today. Lievens began his career as a painter in his mid-teens, well before Rembrandt. However, art historical writings since the 19th century have dismissed him as a mere follower or a student of Rembrandt, and have not noticed Lievens’s distinctive style. This study looks at the business strategies that Lievens enacted to establish art markets for his paintings. Lievens mass-produced his works by duplicating originals and commanded diverse styles to appeal to his buyers’ various tastes. Through an active exchange of market information with his fellow painters, Lievens determined the quantity, quality, and prices of his works.
