초록

본 논문은 실험경제학 ‘선언’이라 칭해지기도 했던 버논 스미스의 1982년 논문 “실험과학으로서의 미시경제시스템”을 분석해 초기 실험경제학의 특징을 제시하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이를 위해 우선 당시에 스미스를 비롯한 실험경제학자들이 어떤 경제학자들과 ‘동맹’을 형성하고 있었으며, 어떤 사회과학자들과는 거리를 유지하고 있었는지를 기술한다. 이어 스미스가 고안해낸 선호 통제 방식에 대한 해석을 제시한다. 이 해석을 통해 선호 통제의 배후에선 상호 이익이 되는 거래를 위한 교환관계가 실험자와 피실험자 사이에 형성된다는 점이 부각된다. 마지막으로 실험실 실험에 의해 가능해진 인과적 추론의 일반화 문제에 대한 스미스의 견해를 정리하고, 이 문제의 해결책으로 제시되었던 것 중 스미스가 일관되게 비판했던 것이 무엇이었는지를 설명한다.

Abstract

This paper examines Vernon Smith’s 1982 paper “Microeconomic Systems as an Experimental Science”—which has been dubbed the ‘manifesto’ of experimental economics—with a view to providing some characteristics of early experimental economics. To this end, it is pointed out that in the early 1980s, Smith and his collaborators were happy to strike alliances with mechanism design theorists on the one hand, and that, on the other, they kept cognitive psychologists at arm’s length. Subsequently, an interpretation is offered concerning the way in which Smith controls subjects’ preferences by making use of monetary rewards, with an emphasis placed upon the relationship formed between the experimenter and the subject. Also, this paper sheds light on Smith’s views on the issue of generalizability of the causal inference drawn from laboratory experiments, and highlights the fact that he made a sharp distinction between experiments and simulations.
