Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to clarify what kind of picture Vernon Smith draws about the implication of his life-long endeavors in the laboratory and other research outcomes directly or indirectly linked to his laboratory pursuits. His big picture contains a few conceptual pairs such as personal exchanges versus impersonal exchanges, and constructivist rationality versus ecological rationality. Smith locates at the foundation of personal and impersonal exchanges, the human universal propensity to engage in exchanges; and he nicely places the two forms of rationality within an evolutionary argument. Smith's perspective restores the study of institutions to a central position in economics. Furthermore, he presents an optimistic view upon the prospect of designing/constructing markets and (other) market-like institutions, which one should keep in mind in gauging the place of Smith's experimental economics within the neoliberal movement.
