보훈의식의 영향요인에 대한 고찰: 제도적 여건과 사회자본 비교

초록

본 연구는 보훈의식의 주된 영향요인이 무엇인지를 밝히는데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 제도론자와 문화론자의 주장을 받아들여, 보훈의식의 주된 영향요인을 제도적 여건과 사회자본으로 설정하였다. 그리고 이들 중 어떤 요인이 보훈의식 향상에 보다 큰 영향을 미칠 것인지를 규명코자 하였다. 분석에는 37개국 설문자료와 통계자료를 병행하여 사용하였다. 설문자료만으로는 객관적 차원의 정치, 경제적 성과 측정에 한계가 있기 때문이다. 본 연구를 통한 분석결과는 다음과 같다. ① 민주주의 수준이 높은 국가일수록 호국정신이 낮다. ② 국가 경제력이 큰 국가일수록 국가 일체감이 낮다. ③ 1인당 국민소득이 높은 국가일수록 호국정신과 국민적 자긍심이 낮다. ④ 가계상황 만족도가 높은 국가일수록 호국정신과 국민적 자긍심이 높다. ⑤ 대인신뢰가 높은 국가일수록 호국정신은 높으나, 국민적 자긍심은 낮다. ⑥ 제도신뢰가 높은 국가일수록 호국정신, 국민적 자긍심, 국가 일체감이 높다. ⑦ 시민참여가 높은 국가일수록 국민적 자긍심과 국가 일체감이 높다. 이러한 결과는 결국 정치적 민주화와 객관적인 소득수준 향상은 보훈의식을 약화시키고, 사회자본은 보훈의식 전반을 강화하는 역할을 한다는 점을 제시하는 것이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 보훈의식 증진을 위한 향후 과제에 대해 논의하였다.

Abstract

This paper investigates the determinants of patriotic consciousness. Following the cultural and institutional theory, it analyzes how the patriotic consciousness, that is, spirit for defending country, national pride, national identity are differentiated by institutional circumstance and social capital. Aggregatedataon economic and political circumstance are combined with survey dataon patriotic consciousness and social capital. Used data are collected from 37 countries. This research finds that ① the level of democracy negatively affects to the spirit for defending country, ② the nation's economic size negatively affects to the national identity, ③ the level of economic development negatively affects to the spirit for defending country and national pride, ④ the degree of satisfaction with the financial situation of household positively contributes to the spirit for defending country and national pride, ⑤ interpersonal trust positively contributes to the spirit for defending country, but negatively affectsto the national pride, ⑥ institutional trust positively contributes to the spirit for defending country, national pride and national identity, ⑦ membership in associations positively contributes to the national pride and national identity. From this results, it is confirmed that on the one hand, political democratization and economic development grow weak the patriotic consciousness, on the other hand, social capital reinforces the patriotic consciousness. Based upon such results, this research discusses how to raise up patriotic consciousness through the increase of social capital.
