Abstract
The purpose of this study explored the effect on the preference and the approval rating for candidates of TV Debate in the 2014 Televised Seoul Mayoral Debate. We used the contents analysis for exploring the candidates’ persuasive strategy and the quasi-experimental design for measuring the debate’s effect. As a result of the study, first, after watching the debate, the preference and approval rating of the candidate unknown to the voter is increased, with no effect on well-known candidates. Second, there is a difference in persuasive strategies evaluation(persuasive attacks, acclaims) that influence total debate evaluation of each candidates. Acclaims and defenses evaluation influenced total debate evaluation to all candidates, but attacks evaluation did not influence significantly total debate evaluation to the highest candidate in popularity ratings. The candidates’ persuasive strategy perceived by experiment participators watching the TV debate beared a close parallel to the result of content analysis about the persuasive strategy used practically by candidates. Third, using structural equation model, we described the relative contributions of the total evaluation of TV debate, predisposition factors, and post-preference of each candidate to the prediction of the approval rating for each candidate. The total evaluation of TV debate contributed the approval rating in all candidates. This result show the effect of TV debate is statically significant with predisposition factors.
