Abstract
This study distinguished members of Korean society into the 2030 Generation and the 4050 Generation, and investigated the effects of citizens’ media use (traditional media and Internet use) and their social capital (generalized trust and social norm) upon their confidence on people in public institutions (government officials and lawmakers) or institutions themselves (judiciary institutions and civic organizations). Results showed that first the confidences on government officials and lawmakers of the 2030 Generation were lower than those of the 4050 Generation, while there were no significant differences between two generations on their confidences on judiciary institutions and civic organizations. Second, the effects of traditional media use of the 2030 Generation were found significant in their confidences on judiciary institutions and civic organizations, while those of their Internet use were significant only in their confidences on civic organizations. For the 4050 Generation, the impact of their traditional media and Internet use were revealed significant only in their confidence on lawmakers. Third, the effects of social capital on the four respective institutional confidences remained statistically significant for both generational groups of the 2030 Generation and the 4050 Generation.
