Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the gaze behavior and movement smoothness in golf putting depending on different skill levels, performance accuracy, and putting distance. Eighteen golfers(nine experts and nine non-experts) performed a golf putting task of different distances(2m, 4m, and 6m). EMR-8 was used to collect data of the gaze behavior and a motion analysis system was used to collect kinematics of a putter head movement. The variables were the quiet eye duration(QED), defined as the duration of the final fixation on the ball immediately before the beginning of the downswing, and a normalized jerk-cost(NJerk), defined as an index of smoothness of putting stroke movement. The results indicate that the expert group had a longer QED than the non-expert group, and had a longer QED in successful trials than in non-successful ones. In the hall direction during the downswing phase, experts showed lower NJerk on all distance conditions than non-experts, regardless of putting accuracy. From the correlation analysis between the gaze behavior and the putting movement, a negative correlation was found between the QED and the NJerk in the hall direction during downswing, and between the QED and the ratio of downswing to total swing. A positive correlation was significantly found between the NJerk in hall direction during downswing phase and the ratio downswing to total swing. These results indicate that the higher QED is followed by the smoother downswing, and experts show more accurate putting performance by keeping a lower ratio of downswing to total swing. We conclude that the QED and NJerk might be important variables to evaluate the golf putting performance, and present a possibility to be able to explain the coupling process between the gaze behavior and putting movement.
