Abstract

This study examined the effect of distributing practice across the morning, afternoon, and evening sessions on learning of a golf putting skill. Thirty-six participants were asked to putt the ball as close to the target as possible. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups that differed in the number of practice session performed in the morning, afternoon, and evening. In the one session group participants practiced once in the morning or afternoon. The two session group practiced the first practice session in the morning and 5 hours later the second practice session in the afternoon. The three session group practiced three times at intervals of 5 hours in the morning, afternoon, and evening. The practice groups revealed no difference during the practice phase and 10-min and 24-hr retention tests. These results indicate that distributing the practice sessions across the morning, afternoon, and evening does not benefit motor learning. Rather, considering learning efficiency massing practice sessions is more efficient. than distributing. If the present results came from sleep-dependent consolidation process, the practice sessions should be distributed across days not within a day for learning benefit. If the present results was resulted from wake-based consolidation process, the interval between the practice sessions should be longer for a sufficient consolidation process. However, more detailed study is needed to clarify whether the present results are the effects of wake-based memory consolidation or sleep-dependent consolidation process.
