Abstract
OBJECTIVE: We investigated the effect of pyruvate supplementation on blood fatigue factors, fatty acid and glycerol metabolism and on lipid components in untrained men. METHODS: 10 male collegians participated in 2 experimental conditions(normal(N), pyruvate supplementation(P)). All subjects exercised for 90 min with a 5% gradient and a 5 mph exercise load followed with a 30 min recovery after the exercise. Blood was drawn 4 times(resting, exercise 30 min, exercise 90 min, recovery 30 min). Blood samples were used to analyze lactate, phosphorous, FFA, glycerol, TG, TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, and % body fat. For P group, the subjects received a daily dose of pyruvate 6g , orally, during 6 days. The results were analyzed by analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc test, and significance was set at P<.05. RESULTS: In our model, pyruvate supplementation decreased the concentrations of lactate and phosphorous during exercise and recovery times. The supplement protocol also decrease blood FFA and glycerol levels. In blood lipid components, pyruvate supplementation increased HDL-C and decreased TG, TC, LDL-C. The % body fat decreased by 0.82% for supplemented group. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that pyruvate supplementation decrease fatigue factors, but not increases lipid oxidation during exercise. Moreover, pyruvate supplementation was beneficial through changing blood lipid components and even greater effects could be expected for the reducing % fat in not only obese but also healthy men.
