채만식의 역사소설이 보여주는 역사 주체의 불가능성은 식민지 전사에 대한추상화, 그리고 이를 통한 역사 주체의 이상화와는 크게 다른 것이었다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 해방이 가져다 준 새로운 기대와 긍정은 자칫 식민지 전사를추상화, 이상화할 위험을 안고 있는 것이었다. 식민지 전사를 추상화하게 되면,해방은 ‘민족 불멸’이라는 과장된 수사로 포장되어 지극히 당연한 것으로 받아들여지게 된다. 이렇게 되면 ‘민족’이라는 추상화된 집단 주체만 드러날 뿐, 근대역사의 모순 속에서 형성되는 역사 주체의 문제는 사라지고 만다. 채만식은 이러한 상황에서 역사의 모순을 그것 자체로 받아들이면서 분열 상태에 놓인 주체를 재현하고 그 가능성을 모색하고자 했다. 『옥랑사』와 『역사』 연작은 식민지전사를 재현하기 위해 설화와 연대기를 활용하고 있으면서도, 구체적인 양상에서 큰 차이를 보이고 있는데, 이는 그가 역사 주체의 가능성을 다각적으로 모색하였으며, 그러나 그 모색 과정이 어느 한 방향으로 수렴되기 극히 곤란하였음을 보여주는 것이라 할 수 있다.
Abstract
Chae Man-sik wrote Historical Novels in the Liberation Period like『Ongnangsa』 and 「History」 series. These works reconstructedpre-colonial history in many ways, and sought out possibility of establishmentof Historical Subject in the Liberation Period. 『Ongnangsa』 is an adventure story that happened in historical time andspace by Falktale type character. Jang Seon-yong, the main character isfalktale type character with extraordinary ability. He entered into Historicaltime and space, and started adventures one after another. But he is just anindividual in historical time and space, so he can't change the flow of history. The falktale type hero in historical time and space couldn't break away fromthe pressure imposed by history. 「History」 series realign historical stories over the falktale time. Thesituation that grandmother tell her descendants historical stories in the workis similar to the falktales tradition. And the old tale at the start of the workrepresents infinitely long time, so it is contrasted with the ensuing historicaltime. 「History」 series could break away from the pressure imposed by historyin this way, but it couldn't ensure specific time and space that HistoricalSubject can be established. Chae Man-sik's Historical Novels tried to recognize realities of theLiberation Period specifically, establish Historical Subject in the LiberationPeriod by reproduction of the pre-colonial history. But falktales and Chroniclecouldn't be combined organically. And the Subject showed aspect that wassplit between these two forms.
