서원대학교 <사고와 표현>의 운영과 방향 모색

서원대학교에서는 2005년 1학기부터 신입생을 대상으로 <사고와 표현> 과목을1, 2 학기 교양 필수과목으로 개설해오고 있다. 수강반은 학과별로 40여명 내외의 수강 정원의 40여 개의 반으로 분반되어 있다. 서원대의 <사고와 표현>은 통합교과형 교재를 활용한 기초 교양 과목으로 창의적, 비판적, 논리적 사고력 향상과 글쓰기와 말하기의 표현 연습을 기본 목적으로 한다. 1학기 과정인 <사고와 표현 1>에서는 여러 분야의 선별된 텍스트를읽고, 사고, 읽기, 쓰기의 이론을 참고하여 다양한 형식의 글쓰기를 연습한다. 한 학기 동안 최소 4회의 글쓰기들을 첨삭하여 개별 학생들에게 조언해주는 것을 공동강의 지침으로 하고 있다. <사고와 표현 2>는 토론, 토의, 발표, 면접의여러 가지 방법들을 활용한 말하기에 중점을 두고 있으며, 특히 찬반 입장이 대립된 논제들에 대해 조별토론을 하면서 논리적이고 설득적인 말하기 능력을 향상시키는 것을 목표로 한다. 본 강의는 학생들이 주입식 교육의 수동적인 수용자가 아니라 텍스트의 문제에 대한 자기 나름대로의 해답을 스스로 만들어가는 강의의 주체가 되도록 이끌고, 텍스트가 담고 있는 문제들을 학생들 자신의 삶과 연관시켜 사색해보도록 유도해준다. 서원대의 <사고와 표현>은 앞으로 강의 내용과 방향 차원에서, 강의 매체 활용 차원에서, 교재 내용과 방향 차원에서 보완을 해나가면서 지성과 감성이 조화를 이루는 전인격적인 인성을 계발하고 삶을 고양시켜 줄 수 있는 대학교육의 바탕이 되는 필수 교양 과목으로서의 정체성을 확립해 가야 할 것이다.
Abstract
Seonwon University has been holding a class of ‘Thinkingand Expression’ for freshmen as an essential course since thefirst semester of 2005. The classes are divided into about 40classes of around 40 students by department. Seowon University’s ‘Thinking and Expression’ is a basicliberal arts course using an integrated-course type textbook,and its basic purpose is to facilitate improvement of students’logical thinking and practicing expressions for writing andspeaking. In ‘Thinking and Expression 1,’ which is a class forthe first semester, students read selected texts in diversefields, and practice various forms of writing with reference oftheories of thinking, reading, and writing. The shared lectureof the class has a principle of revising at least four writingsof students and individually advising them during the onesemester. ‘Thinking and Expression 2’ puts emphasis on thevarious methods of speaking such as debate, discussion,presentation, interview. In particular, this class aims toimprove logical and persuasive speaking through groupdebate on controversial debate issues. This lecture leads students to be active in study ratherthan passive by enabling them to develop their own answersto the questions in the text; and it also facilitates them tothink of issues in the text in relation to their life. SeowonUniversity’s ‘Thinking and Expression,’ while complementingtextbooks’ contents and direction, should establish its identityas an essential humanity course, which becomes foundation ofcollege education to develop wholesome personality harmonizingintellect and emotion and to improve quality of life.
