Abstract

This study aims to explore the application of Régine Detambel’s creative bibliotherapy theory in a university liberal arts course by employing literary retelling as a teaching method. The study utilizes Detambel’s perspective on creative bibliotherapy (Bibliothérapie créative). Specifically, it examines how students engage in therapeutic writing by retelling literature, unraveling their experiences and mental knots. Chapter 2 discusses Detambel’s concept of “adapting to literature,” dividing it into metaphorical retelling and retelling through voice and body. Metaphorical retelling involves reinterpreting the metaphors within a text to align with personal experiences. Retelling through voice and body includes reading aloud and using physical expression to engage with the text, facilitating emotional and experiential expression. Chapter 3 investigates how students adapt to literature through the retelling of literary classics in a liberal arts course. It particularly examines how students, through autobiographical writing inspired by Marguerite Duras’ The Lover, reveal their wounds using a “substitute self” to craft therapeutic self-narratives. This process highlights the healing aspects of literary retelling. The study concludes that Detambel’s concept and methods of creative bibliotherapy can be effectively applied to liberal arts literature courses. Through literary retelling, students not only enhance their literacy skills but also engage in the therapeutic process of constructing self-narratives.
