Abstract

This study aimed to develop a reading education program that could enhance the reading abilities and motivation of male students, who typically exhibit lower performance in these areas compared to female students. By integrating Flow theory with Humanities classics reading, the research sought to create an effective educational program tailored specifically to male students and evaluate its effectiveness. Globally, gender disparities in reading achievement are prevalent, with boys often lagging behind girls. While various efforts have been made internationally to address this issue, the gap in literacy competence among male students in Korea has not been systematically addressed. To bridge this gap, the study developed a practical program designed to transform non-reading male students, particularly those in the lower to middle achievement range, into active readers. By analyzing the socio-cultural factors contributing to boys’ disinterest in reading, the program was designed to be engaging and relevant to them, incorporating elements of Flow to enhance their reading experience. The program was structured to improve reading attitudes and develop integrated reading abilities based on fundamental comprehension skills. An evaluation of the program’s effectiveness confirmed that it significantly contributed to the development of male students as readers.
