Abstract

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the improvement on self-narrative writing and the impact of bibliotherapy to the students based on the result of self-selected reading projects in the ‘Creative Thinking and Expression’ class as a required liberal arts course in Kon KuK University. The class was conducted with a total of 250 students; 4 classes with 150 students in spring 2020 and 2 classes with 60 students in fall 2020. A book was self-selected every week followed by a self-narrative writing assignment of the book. Then the self-narrative writing was posted to be reviewed by other students and the writer needed to evaluate the feedback. The class was to improve creative thinking and writing as one of the required liberal arts classes and it was open to every students regardless the academic year and the discipline. The in-class presentations were a required assignment of the class but it was replaced by e-campus feedback system due to the pandemic. As a result the study, the students were able to experience multiple impacts on self-narrative writing and to the aspect of bibliotherapy by the self-selected read project as follows. 1. The self-narrative writing skill was improved resulted by the practices of attentive decision making process and methodical communicative writing. 2. Both the writers and readers were able to participate 2-way communications on the self-narrative writing in order to satisfy the objectives of the class. 3. The whole process of the project evidenced the possibility of bibliotherapy by accumulating self-awareness from the feedback process. The survey of the registered students in 2021 indicated that 95% of the students registered the class because of the class activities and 34% stated that the project was one of the reasons that they registered. However, the study could be improved and applied to the field if detailed analysis conducted on the effect of the class projects to the bibliotherapy. In conclusion, in order to achieve the objectives of the class as a required writing class in the university, the project of self-selected read needs to be selected and maintained as a major part of the class. The self-selected read is also necessary as a course for the bibliotherapy due to its characteristics of self-awareness practices and communicative methods between the students. The self-selected read project produced a par result on student development in terms of creative writing and bibliotherapy even in the pandemic situation with e-campus system as before pandemic with on-campus environment.
