이 논문은 리차드 슈스터만의 소마미학(somaesthetics)적 관점에서 패션모델의 신체미학을 분석하고, 패션모델이 자신의 신체 경험을 어떻게 인식하고 표현하는지, 그리고 이러한 신체 인식이 사회적 맥락에서 어떻게 형성되는지를 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 기존의 아름다움 이론과 슈스터만의 ‘살아있는 아름다움’ 개념을중심으로, 패션모델의 이미지와 움직임이 어떻게 시대적⋅문화적으로 형성되는지를 검토한다. 패션모델은 단순한아름다움의 대명사가 아닌 신체미학의 표상으로서의 역할과, 특정 사회적 기준과 가치관을 반영하는 상징, 그리고사회적 맥락이 상호작용하는 복잡한 영역이다. 이러한 분석을 통해 패션모델들이 신체 경험을 통해 사회적 메시지를 전달하는 방식을 구체적으로 밝히고자 한다. 이 연구를 통해 현대의 미적 가치와 사회적⋅문화적 아름다움의기준을 재조명하고, 패션모델 개인의 미적 표현을 넘어 사회적 기준과 정체성의 형성을 이해하는 데 기여할 수 있기를 기대한다. 소마미학을 통해 패션모델들이 과거의 아름다움에 대한 고정관념과 사회적 규범에 도전하고, 신체미학을 재정의함으로써 개인의 차이가 존중받고, 긍정적인 신체 이미지를 장려하는 보다 포용적인 문화로 나아가는 데 기여할 수 있기를 바란다.
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the body aesthetics of fashion models from the perspective of Richard Shusterman’s somaesthetics, exploring how fashion models perceive and express their bodily experiences, and how these perceptions are shaped within broader social and cultural contexts. To this end, the study examines how the image and movement of fashion models have been historically and culturally constructed, drawing on both traditional theories of beauty and Shusterman’s concept of “ living beauty.” Fashion models are not merely symbols of idealized beauty but embody the body aesthetics as representations of aesthetic philosophy, reflecting particular social standards, values, and complex cultural dynamics. Through this analysis, the study seeks to clarify how fashion models convey social messages through their bodily presence and performative expressions. Ultimately, this research aims to recontextualize contemporary aesthetic values and standards of beauty by moving beyond individual aesthetic expression to examine how social norms and identities are formed. By applying somaesthetic theory, the study shows how fashion models challenge conventional beauty norms and social expectations, redefine the body aesthetics, and contribute to fostering a more inclusive culture where individual differences are respected and positive body images are encouraged.
