Abstract
This study aims to elucidate the educational implications of the aesthetic experience in exploring alternatives to address the educational problems associated with lookism. Because lookism, which promotes a distorted aesthetic sense of the body, is an ideology established through the medium of external body consciousness, it can be argued that the conversion of body consciousness is a prerequisite for addressing the educational problems it engenders. As discussed in pragmatist aesthetics, aesthetic experience serves as a crucial catalyst for the conversion of body consciousness, enabling us to perceive our bodies as a locus where aesthetic experience occurs and as a medium for sharing the meaning of the aesthetic experience. Shusterman’s Somaesthetics, which explores the crucial role of the body in aesthetic experience, suggests the possibility of a conversion of body consciousness through aesthetic experience by arguing that we can have better experiences through enhanced body consciousness. Dewey’s account of aesthetic experience delineates the specific ways in which this possibility manifests during the process of aesthetic experience. Noting that a shift from external body consciousness to integral body consciousness can be achieved through the process of aesthetic experience, this study explores its educational implications. First, the aesthetic experience implies a sense of growth as a moment of celebration of the unity between the self and the environment. Furthermore, aesthetic experience can restore bodily agency by enhancing sensory quality and mediate intimate interactions by enabling the communication of experiential meanings.
