본 논문의 목적은 리처드 슈스터만의 신체미학(somaesthetics)을 통해 여성주의의 관점에서 주체적이고 반성적인 몸의 의미를 탐색하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 신체미학의 정의와 미학에서 어떤 중요성이 있는지 고찰하고, 기존의 철학적 논의 가운데 시몬느 드 보부아르의 분석을 토대로 문제를 제기한다. 슈스터만의 신념은 신체미학의 원리가 여성의 존재를 더욱 강하게 하면서도 사회적이고 경제적인 여성의 상황을 개선할 수 있으며 이는 실천적이고 인식적인 배움을 통해서 성취될 수 있다고 본다. 실제로 신체미학이 예술행위와 작품에 어떠한 방식으로 조망할 수 있는지 알아보기 위하여 현대 여성예술가들의 몸에 대한 담론을 살펴본다. 프래그머티즘 미학을 논의하는 슈스터만이 구체적으로 경험이 어떻게 구현되며, 여성주의의 관점이 예술의 영역에서도 어떠한 방식으로 유의미한 관점을 제공할 수 있는지 시몬느 드 보부아르, 존 듀이, 윌리엄 제임스를 통해 알아보고자 한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to explore the aesthetic meaning of the body. Richard Shusterman's body aesthetics(somaesthetics) is analyzed from the perspective of feminism. To this end, one definition of women's physical body beauty or pulchritude and its aesthetic importance can draw upon the existing discussion of Simone de Beauvoir. Her analysis is compared to Shusterman's principles of aesthetics. In this paper, I analyze physical activity of women and works of women's art to test Shusterman's body aesthetics ideas to find out how contemporary women artists deploy the discourse of the female body. In addition to Shusterman's gendered ideas of aesthetics I review de Beauvoir, Dewey, and William James.
