Abstract
Brecht, along with Shakespeare, Molière, Racine and Chekhov, is one of the playwrights whose works have been staged in France most frequently. Sixty years since his passing, Brecht is still referred in French theatre. However, as a playwright from the communist bloc, Brecht had gone through some hardships before he could receive the recognition he has today. Mnouchkine did not have direct contact with Brecht as she began her theatrical activities in the 1960s, but of all the French thespians, her works displayed the greatest influence of Brecht’s works. She focused on social reality and dealt with issues that the modern society considers important including immigrants, human rights, power, and gender. The way she operated theater companies and creative activities stands far from Brecht’s, like organizing and operating unions, collaborative creation process, improvisation, stage that focuses visual elements, and realistic acting style. Nonetheless, the traces of the German playwright can be found not only in the theme of her works, but in her style including episodic composition, how she focuses more on the action of the event and less on the ending, her use of subtitles or video, the simplified stage, and actors representing character without being completely immersed in the character. The Théâtre du Soleil is classified more as a Citizen Theatre(Théatre citoyen) rather than a Popular Theatre in France. This is because this company opens a public discourse through social issues while keeping a distance from political actions. Brecht’s traces are shown in a way that it focused on as the absurd world and the marginalized, such the socially underprivileged.
