Abstract

It was from the generations of Brecht’s influence that dramaturgy, a terminology of dramatic composition in ‘the means for the construction of texts,’ was first accepted as the concept of theater practice in France. They first learned dramaturgy from Brecht in the framework of thought by reading a drama and conceptualizing it interpretively. However, theaters in France refused to institutionalize dramaturg, which was responsible for taking exclusive charge of dramaturgy in the theater. As Bernard Dort pointed out, dramaturgy is an ‘état d’esprit’ in French dramas, not a function or a mission of a particular expert. The concept of dramaturgy in France developed and orbited coincidentally with the critical concept. It was precisely ‘dramaturgy,’ that was the reason for implementing a concrete interpretation on a stage in various possibilities for interpretation. However, dramaturgy in this framework of thought is not realized by the implementation of the original blueprint on a stage, but by a ‘dramaturgie de plateau,’ in the sense that it is the framework of thought that is influenced and transformed recurrently in the process of practice among the actors on stage. Theatrical play in the post-dramatic era no longer maintains the form of drama; however, there exists an ‘action’ of materials that excludes language, and this deed requires dramaturgy that weaves materials belonging to different layers, not on the grounds of emulative reappearance. Such process is the concept of dramaturgy that was discussed in the French dramas over the 60 years from Brecht’s influence to postdramatic theatre.
