의존명사는 문법화 과정의 중심에 있는 범주이다. 本稿에서는 의존명사의 개념적 속성인 ‘單語性’과 ‘依存性’을 통해 의존명사의 변별적 특성과 가능 목록을 재검토하였다. 의존명사는 단독적으로 올 수 없고 冠形語句를 필수적으로 요구하는 非實質 명사, 즉 통사상 [+N] 자질을 가지면서 의미적으로 비어 있는 범주로 정의된다. 의미상 비어 있는 범주라는 것은 共時的으로 原意味를 확인할 수 없거나, 原意味와의 관련성이 멀어져 先後行 결합 요소와 함께 문법적 의미를 표현함을 의미한다. 의존명사는 의존적이며 非實質的 요소라는 점에서 접사와 유사하나 구 이상 단위의 관형어구를 취한다는 점에서 접사와 구분된다. 이 특성에 의해 의존명사는 단어 범주에 歸屬되며 그중에서도 명사의 한 구성원으로 자리매김된다. 그러나 의존명사는 자립명사와 달리 통사·의미적 의존성이 강해 선행 성분을 필수적으로 요구하며 실질적 의미를 띠지 못한다.
Abstract
The bound noun is the category located in the center of gram- maticalization. This paper aims to explore the distinctive properties of bound noun and reconsider its potential lists. The properties are extracted through two notional attributes of bound noun : wordness and dependence. The bound noun is defined as the non-content noun requiring the preceding adnominal constituents, i.e. the category that is empty in semantics and has [+N] feature in syntax. It means that the bound noun represents the functional meaning with its preceding/following constituents, otherwise, at least, its meaning is synchronically in- explicable. The bound noun distinguishes from the suffix by combining with phrases as well as words. This distinctive property identifies the bound noun as ‘word' inter alia ‘noun'. However, unlike independent noun, the bound noun is highly dependent on the preceding constituents both in syntax and in semantics .
