Abstract
A Study of Korean Modern Women's Literary History-Novel - focusing on the historic development of female language - Kim, Mi-hyun / Hwang, Do-kyung / Kwag, Seung-mi The aim of this thesis is to investigate the historical development of Korean modern women's novels focusing on female language. For this study, we divided the modern women's literary history into three parts : (1) 1910s ~ 1945, (2) 1945 ~ 1970, (3) 1970 ~ present. At first period, women begin to express their oppressive situations and hidden desires for the first time. Therefore, they usually use 'the language of confession' like as autobiography and letter closely related to the ontological awakening as a woman. At second period enveloped in the mood of nothingness and ruins, women writers usually describe the tragic feelings of love lyrically and sensually through objective correlatives. But their story usually ends as the escape from reality or adaptation to destiny, so this can be estimated as a withdrawal in women's consciousness. After 1970s, women literature shows the great development. In this period, women writers try to expressive their various conflicting realities with `the double language' which depicts the conflicts between the self and the world, the ideal and the reality, inside and outside, men and women, and so on, and also pursues the harmony and fusion of them. This shows that women still stand on the conflicting situations between oppression and liberalization, under- standing and misunderstanding, extinction and revival.
