Abstract

A Study of the Verbal Noun Constructions Seong, Hwan-gap․Um, Hong-jun This paper deals with the derivational process of the verbal noun constructions and the formal feature checking in them under the Minimalist Program. It seems that since they may take complements and may be assigned Case, verbal nouns behave both as verbs and as noun superficially. There have been many studies on the constructions, in order to represent their dual property properly in the course of the derivation. In this paper, we review Ko(1988), Seo(1975), Lee(1988), Lim (1979) and Shi(1994), which deal with most of the works on the constructions, pointing out their problems. Using Noun Incorporation, Merger, and V' Reanalysis, we suggest an alternative for the derivation of the constructions and solve their problems. Under our analysis, since we adopt the Minimalist Program conducted by Chomsky(1995, 1998, 1999), formal feature checking and the derivational process are executed from the bottom to the top. This means that, under our analysis, a new category cannot be introduced and Strict Cyclic Condition is observed naturally. Because through the Noun Incorporation and V' Reanalysis, the light verb ‘ha-’ and the verbal noun ‘kongpu' are reanalyzed into the verb, the constructions can be built in the right sentence structure.
