Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the current state of Sino-Korean word education in high school Korean language education and explore and propose alternatives for improving literacy related to Sino-Korean words. Amid the recent decline in literacy, we focused on the fact that cases related to vocabulary are centered on Sino-Korean words. We analyzed the texts of high school Korean language textbooks, which embody the Korean language curriculum, and examined the current state of Sino-Korean word education within the context of Korean language education. The results revealed that the policy of the exclusive use of Hangul led to the presentation of Sino-Korean word texts in textbooks without sufficient attention or consideration for teaching and learning, thus hindering Sino-Korean word education. To address this issue, alternatives are proposed by applying vocabulary education methods to Sino-Korean word teaching and learning. These include increasing the frequency of exposure to Sino-Korean words through repetitive learning, expanding vocabulary using the characteristics of Sino-Korean words, and promoting learning through the assessment and certification of Sino-Korean word proficiency. In the challenging reality of Sino-Korean word education in Korean language education, we hope that this study, when applied to the classroom, will contribute to the improvement of high school students’ literacy.
