Abstract

This essay examines Lee Younghee’s perspective on world history during the Cold War and the intellectual stance reflected in his writings. Lee Younghee understood the Cold War not primarily as a confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union, but as the coexistence of opposing systems. He characterized the period from the Russian Revolution to World War II as “Cold War prehistory” and the subsequent era as the “postwar Cold War.” By reconceptualizing the Cold War and extending its historical scope to encompass the entire twentieth century, he sought to challenge rigid perceptions of the Cold War in Korean society and to demonstrate that the détente of the 1970s was not unexpected but historically inevitable. Although Lee Younghee meticulously documented historical facts, he did not refrain from articulating his own convictions. Consequently, his writings on global affairs constitute a dynamic space in which cool-headed analysis and passion, objectivity and subjectivity, intersect. This article reexamines contested aspects of Lee Younghee’s worldview, with particular attention to his views on the Third World, and emphasizes his optimism as a deliberate stance adopted by an engaged intellectual committed to envisioning a world beyond the legacy of imperialism.
